Zambia first participated at the Olympic Games under the current name in 1968, and has sent athletes to compete in most Summer Olympic Games since then. The nation joined the Congolese-led boycott in Montreal 1976. Previously, Zambia competed under two different banners: Rhodesia in Rome 1960 and Northern Rhodesia in Tokyo 1964. Zambia has never attended any edition of the Winter Olympic Games.

Zambian athletes have won a total of three medals at the Summer Olympic Games, a bronze from boxer Keith Mwila in the men's light flyweight division at Los Angeles 1984; a silver from Samuel Matete in the men's 400 m hurdles at Atlanta 1996; and another bronze from Muzala Samukonga in the men's 400 metres at Paris 2024.

The National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) was formed in 1951 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1963.
