The women's 59 kg of Weightlifting 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 27 July 2021 in the Tokyo International Forum. With 14 athletes competing, the event was won by Kuo Hsing-chun from Chinese Taipei, with Polina Guryeva from Turkmenistan taking the silver medal and Mikiko Andoh from Japan taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two rounds in which athletes try to lift as much weight as possible. In the snatch round, this lift needs to be done in one continuous motion, while the competitors are allowed to rest the barbell on the chest in the clean and jerk. The athlete with the highest combined weight lifted wins the event.
Preview[]
Fourteen athletes qualified for the event with Kuo Hsing-chun as the big favorite for the title. The weightlifter from Chinese Taipei won the last three editions of the world championships, the last five editions of the Asian championships, and held the world record in the event. However, there were plenty of contenders for the other medals. Mikiko Andoh finished fifth at the most recent world championships, while Zoe Smith had finished sixth and Yusleidy Mariana Figueroa Roldan had finished just behind her. Dora Meiriama Tchakounte and Polina Guryeva had also proven to be strong during the qualification period, with Maria Alexandra Escobar Guerrero and Izabella Yaylyan as potential outsiders.
