The women's 55 kg of Weightlifting 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 26 July 2021 in the Tokyo International Forum. With 14 athletes competing, the event was won by Hidilyn Diaz from Philippines, with Liao Qiuyun from China taking the silver medal and Zulfiya Chinshanlo from Kazakhstan taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two rounds in which athletes try to lift as much weight as possible. In the snatch round, this lift needs to be done in one continuous motion, while the competitors are allowed to rest the barbell on the chest in the clean and jerk. The athlete with the highest combined weight lifted wins the event.
Preview[]
Fourteen athletes qualified for the event with Liao Qiuyun as the reigning world champion, and her biggest challenge seemed to come from Hidilyn Diaz, who had won an Olympic silver medal in 2016 and finished third at the world championships in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Ham Eun-ji, Muattar Nabieva, and Zulfiya Chinshanlo were also featured in a strong field, with Kristina Shermetova and Nouha Landoulsi as potential outsiders for the medals.
