Uwe Daßler is a swimmer who has competed for East Germany. He competed at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games.
Dassler arrived at his first Olympics as the world's top middle-distance freestyle swimmer. He entered the men's 400 metres freestyle final with a fourth-fastest time from the prelims. Coming from fourth at the 350-metre turn, Dassler edged past the leaders Matthew Cetlinski and Artur Wojdat to the front of the field for the gold with a new world record time of 3:46.95. As Duncan Armstrong and Wojdat locked the podium spots under the previous world record time, the final won by Dassler was billed the Race of the Century.
Dassler claimed a bronze behind the winner Vladimir Salnikov by six minutes in the 1500 metres freestyle final and also contributed to the East Germans' runner-up feat in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay, ending his Olympic career with a full set of medals.
After missing the selection on the German team for Barcelona 1992, Dassler retired from competitive swimming.
