Turkmenistan first participated at the Olympic Games as an independent nation in 1996 and has sent athletes to compete in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games since then. Previously, Turkmen athletes attended the Games with the Soviet Union team from 1952 to 1988 and as part of the Unified Team in 1992. Unlike the former Soviet states, Turkmenistan has never appeared in any edition of the Winter Olympic Games.
On July 27, 2021, Turkmenistan captured its first ever Olympic medal as an independent nation in Tokyo 2020 with a bronze from weightlifter Polina Guryeva in the women's 59 kg category.
The National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan was established in 1990.
