Fifty-four athletes qualified for the event with 2019 world champion and five-time winner of 2019 triathlon championships series events Katie Zaferes as the top favorite for the event, though limited to no races in the year leading up to the Olympic Games made it difficult to select the medal contenders. However, the British and American athletes qualified with strong representations, with the United States' Summer Rappaport and Taylor Knibb also ranked in the top 15 of the qualifying world rankings, while the British team of Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jessica Learmonth, and defending bronze medalist Vicky Holland were all ranked in the top 5. Laura Lindemann and Rachel Klamer lead a strong competition, with Cassandre Beaugrand, Ashleigh Gentle, defending silver medalist Nicola Spirig, and 2016 and 2017 world champion Flora Duffy also racing for the medals.
