Tonga first participated at the Olympic Games in 1984 and sent its athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic edition since then. Sochi 2014 marked Tonga's official debut at the Winter Olympic Games, with Bruno Banani riding in the men's luge. Currently, Tonga attended a total of twelve editions at the Games (ten Summer and two Winter).

Tongan athletes have won a single medal at the Summer Olympic Games with a silver from boxer Paea Wolfgram in the men's super heavyweight division final against Ukraine's Volodymyr Klychko at Atlanta 1996.
