Tanzania first participated at the Olympic Games under the current name in 1964, and has sent athletes to compete in most Summer Olympic Games since then. The nation joined the Congolese-led boycott in Montreal 1976. Tanzania has never attended any edition of the Winter Olympic Games.

Tanzanian athletes have won a total of two medals at the Summer Olympic Games, a silver each from track and field athletes Suleiman Nyambui in the men's 5000 metres and Filbert Bayi in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase at Moscow 1980.

The Tanzania Olympic Committee was formed and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1968.
