Tamás Darnyi is a swimmer who has competed for Hungary. He competed at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympic Games. He was selected to the Hungarian team for Los Angeles 1984 but the Eastern Bloc boycott denied him the opportunity to compete.
Darnyi was the world's all-around male swimmer through the late 1980s and early 1990s. At his first Olympics in 1988, he pulled away from the rest of the field to set a new world record for the gold in the 400 metres individual medley. A few days later, he passed the early leaders Patrick Kühl and Vadim Iarouchtchouk with a fine freestyle swim to snatch another gold with a world record time (2:00.17) in the 200. With this feat, Darnyi became the third male swimmer to strike the medley double (200 and 400) at the Olympic Games, following Gunnar Larsson and Alex Baumann.
Four years later in Barcelona, Darnyi returned to his second Games as the defending champion in the medley double. After seizing a lead from the breaststroke leg, he pulled away from the rest of the field to easily win the 400 metres individual medley race with a time of 4:14.23. In the 200 metres individual medley, he came at the freestyle leg outside the top three, but he powered home to defend his gold in 2:00.76. Darnyi closed out his Olympic career as the first swimmer to ever defend his titles in the medley double (200 and 400).
