Syria, officially known as Syrian Arab Republic, first participated at the Olympic Games in 1948. The nation missed the next four Olympiads after its official debut before returning to the Games in Mexico City 1968. Syrian athletes have appeared in every Summer Olympic edition since then except Montreal 1976 but neither of them have ever attended any edition of the Winter Olympic Games.

Syrian athletes have won a total of four medals at the Summer Olympic Games, a gold in athletics (topped by heptathlete Ghada Shouaa), a silver in freestyle wrestling, and a bronze each in boxing and weightlifting.

The Syrian Olympic Committee was established and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee on 31 January 1948 at the IOC session in Saint Moritz, Switzerland.
