Olympics Wiki

The men's 100 metre backstroke of Swimming 2024 during the 2024 Summer Olympics was held on 28–29 July 2024 in the Paris La Defense Arena. With 46 athletes competing, the event was won by Thomas Ceccon from Italy, with Xu Jiayu from China taking the silver medal and Ryan Murphy from United States taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to eight athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the eight fastest swimmers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-six athletes qualified for the event with a plenty of medal contenders after the defending Olympic champion and silver medalist were banned from the Games due to the country's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ryan Murphy is the only returning medalist from Tokyo 2020 and the leader of the qualifying world rankings in the field that featured the 2017 and 2019 world champion Xu Jiayu, 2022 world champion and current world record holder Thomas Ceccon, reigning world champion Hunter Armstrong, and European champion Apostolos Christou.
