The women's 800 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 29-31 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 31 athletes competing, the event was won by Kathleen Ledecky from United States, with Ariarne Titmus from Australia taking the silver medal and Simona Quadarella from Italy taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the eight fastest athletes qualify for the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Thirty-one athletes qualified for the event with defending Olympic champion and world champion Kathleen Ledecky as the top favorite for the event. Wang Jianjiahe had been the second-fastest athlete during the qualification period but was still almost four seconds slower than the American, but still seemed to have the edge over European champion Simona Quadarella, 400 metres world champion Ariarne Titmus, and Sarah Kohler. Other potential outsiders and medal contenders also included Kiah Melverton, young talent Katie Grimes, and Anastasiia Kirpichnikova.
