Swimming 2020/Women's 50 metre freestyle

The women's 50 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 30 July-1 August 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 83 athletes competing, the event was won by Emma McKeon from Australia, with Sarah Sjoestroem from Sweden taking the silver medal and Pernille Blume from Denmark taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Eighty-three athletes qualified for the shortest and most dynamic event in women's swimming with plenty of medal contenders. Sarah Sjoestroem seemed to be the favorite for the title as the current world record holder and the fastest of the qualification period, though Australians Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell were in form with very fast times during the national trials. European champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo was the only other swimmer to have recorded a time faster than 24 seconds since 2019, with reigning world champion Simone Manuel and defending Olympic champion Pernille Blume just trailing. Other potential outsiders and medal contenders also included the bronze medalist of the European championships Katarzyna Wasick, Mariia Kameneva, Michelle Coleman, Abbey Weitzeil, and Femke Heemskerk.
