The women's 200 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 26-28 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 29 athletes competing, the event was won by Ariarne Titmus from Australia, with Siobhan Bernadette Haughey from Hong Kong taking the silver medal and Penny Oleksiak from Canada taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Twenty-nine athletes qualified for the event with Ariarne Titmus as the woman in form. She only recently approached the world record by a tenth of a second, with times recorded by world champion Federica Pellegrini, defending champion Kathleen Ledecky, and Yang Junxuan over a second behind her. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, Madison Wilson, Allison Schmitt, and Freya Anderson could also contend for the medals in a field that also featured 2018 European champion Charlotte Bonnet, 2021 European champion Barbora Seemanova, 2016 Olympic champion on the 100 metres Penny Oleksiak, and young talent Summer McIntosh.
