The women's 1500 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 26-28 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 33 athletes competing, the event was won by Kathleen Ledecky from United States, with Erica Sullivan from United States taking the silver medal and Sarah Kohler from Germany taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the eight fastest athletes qualify for the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Thirty-three athletes qualified for the inaugural edition of the longest long course event in women's swimming with world record holder Kathleen Ledecky as absolute favorite for the title. The American had set the eleven fastest times ever in the event though didn't defend her world title in 2019. World champion Simona Quadarella seemed to lead the open competition for the remaining medals, with Wang Jianjiahe, Maddy Gough, silver medalist of the world championships Sarah Kohler, Erica Sullivan, and Delfina Pignatiello as main opponents.
