Swimming 2020/Women's 100 metre freestyle

The women's 100 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 28-30 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 52 athletes competing, the event was won by Emma McKeon from Australia, with Siobhan Bernadette Haughey from Hong Kong taking the silver medal and Cate Campbell from Australia taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Fifty-two athletes qualified for the event which had a shared gold in 2016. Penny Oleksiak attempted to defend her title but was not the top favorite, while world champion Simone Manuel didn't qualify for the event during the national trials. 2013 world champion and 2019 world silver medalist Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon, and world record holder Sarah Sjoestroem seemed to contend for the gold medal, with Siobhan Bernadette Haughey and European champion Femke Heemskerk also in form with fast times in the months leading up to the Olympic Games. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Michelle Coleman, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Abbey Weitzeil, Anna Hopkin, and Marie Wattel.
