The women's 100 metre backstroke of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 25-27 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 43 athletes competing, the event was won by Kaylee McKeown from Australia, with Kylie Masse from Canada taking the silver medal and Regan Smith from United States taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-three athletes qualified for the event with a battle to be expected between world champion Kylie Masse, new world record holder Kaylee McKeown, and the reigning world champion on the double distance Regan Smith. The second swimmers representing these nations Rhyan Elizabeth White, Taylor Ruck, and Emily Seebohm also had realistic chances on medals, with Kathleen Dawson, Kira Toussaint, and Margherita Panziera keeping the European hopes alive.
