The men's 800 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 27-29 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 34 athletes competing, the event was won by Robert Finke from United States, with Gregorio Paltrinieri from Italy taking the silver medal and Mykhailo Romanchuk from Ukraine taking bronze.

Format

The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the eight fastest athletes qualify for the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview

Thirty-four athletes qualified for the inaugural edition of the event with Gregorio Paltrinieri as the reigning world champion with Henrik Christiansen and David Aubry having taken silver and bronze at the world championships. Mykhailo Romanchuk was the reigning European champion, with Jack McLoughlin, Florian Wellbrock, Gabriele Detti, and Felix Auboeck as other big names and potential outsiders in the field.
