Olympics Wiki

The men's 50 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 30 July-1 August 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 73 athletes competing, the event was won by Caeleb Dressel from United States, with Florent Manaudou from France taking the silver medal and Bruno Fratus from Brazil taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Seventy-three athletes qualified for the event with Caeleb Dressel as the big favorite in the field. The American took the gold medal at the most recent world championships, almost half a second ahead of Bruno Fratus and Kristian Gkolomeev, with 2013 world championships silver medalist Vladimir Morozov just missing out on a medal. In such a quick event, medal contenders were plenty, with defending silver medalist Florent Manaudou, 2018 European champion Benjamin Proud, reigning European champion Ari-Pekka Liukkonen, and junior world record holder Michael Andrew also in the field. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Thom de Boer, Pawel Juraszek, Lorenzo Zazzeri, and Kliment Kolesnikov.
