Men's 400 metre freestyle
The men's 400 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 24-25 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre . With 36 athletes competing, the event was won by Ahmed Hafnaoui from Tunisia , with Jack McLoughlin from Australia taking the silver medal and Kieran Smith from United States taking bronze.
Format [ ] The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the eight fastest athletes qualify for the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview [ ] Thirty-six athletes qualified for the event with plenty of medal contenders after the reigning world champion was banned for doping offences and the defending Olympic champion and silver medalist of the most recent world championships finished third in the national trials. Elijah Winnington , defending bronze medalist Gabriele Detti , Jack McLoughlin , and Danas Rapsys seemed to have the biggest chances with the fastest qualifying times, but Martin Malyutin and Felix Auboeck finished before the European pair at the European championships. Marco De Tullio , Lukas Martens , and Kieran Smith represented the upcoming generation, with Henning Bennet Muhlleitner , Ji Xinjie , Guilherme Costa , and Jake Mitchell also among the potential outsiders.
