Olympics Wiki

The men's 200 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 25-27 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 39 athletes competing, the event was won by Tom Dean from Great Britain, with Duncan Scott from Great Britain taking the silver medal and Fernando Scheffer from Brazil taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Thirty-nine athletes qualified with a lot of medal contenders in an open field. Danas Rapsys recorded the fastest time in the qualification period and was also the fastest at the most recent world championships, but was disqualified in Gwangju and only took fourth place at the European championships. Defending Olympic champion and reigning world champion Sun Yang was banned from the sport for doping offences and would not be able to defend his title. Katsuhiro Matsumoto took silver at the most recent world championships, ahead of Martin Malyutin and Duncan Scott, but Tom Dean was also in form with the bronze medal at the European championships. Other medal contenders also included Hwang Sun-woo, Kieran Smith, Ji Xinjie, Dominik Kozma, and Antonio Djakovic.
