The men's 200 metre butterfly of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 26-28 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 38 athletes competing, the event was won by Kristof Milak from Hungary, with Tomoru Honda from Japan taking the silver medal and Federico Burdisso from Italy taking bronze.

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Thirty-eight athletes qualified with Kristof Milak as the reigning world champion and world record holder in the event. Daiya Seto and Chad le Clos took silver and bronze at the most recent world championships and would be some of the main contenders for the medals, together with defending bronze medalist Tamas Kenderesi and talent Federico Burdisso, who won silver at the European championships. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Antani Ivanov, Tomoru Honda, Wang Kuan-hung, and Denys Kesyl.
