The men's 200 metre breaststroke of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 27-29 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 40 athletes competing, the event was won by Izaac Stubblety-Cook from Australia, with Arno Kamminga from Netherlands taking the silver medal and Matti Mattsson from Finland taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Forty athletes qualified for the event with quite a few medal contenders in the field. Anton Chupkov was the world record holder when he won the world championships in 2019. Izaac Stubblety-Cook was the man in form with the second-fastest time ever at the national trials, with youngster Shoma Sato, silver medalist of the world championships Matthew Wilson, and silver medalist of the European championships Arno Kamminga as other big medal contenders. Other potential outsiders also included James Wilby, Nic Fink, Ryuya Mura, and Erik Persson.
