The men's 10 kilometre open water of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 5 August 2021 in the Odaiba Marine Park. With 26 athletes competing, the event was won by Florian Wellbrock from Germany, with Kristof Rasovszky from Hungary taking the silver medal and Gregorio Paltrinieri from Italy taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of a single race, in which all competitors conduct a swimming course of 10 kilometres in open water. The competitor with the fastest time is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Twenty-six athletes qualified for the event with plenty of medal contenders in the field. Florian Wellbrock was the reigning world champion, when he beat defending bronze medalist Marc-Antoine Olivier by two-tenths of a second in South Korea. Ferry Weertman was the defending Olympic champion in the event and the world champion of 2017, though in three editions, no athlete had won more than one medal in the event. Kristof Rasovszky was the world champion in the half distance and finished just outside of the podium at the world championships, behind Rob Muffels but just ahead of 2017 silver medalist Jordan Wilimovsky and 2016 Olympic champion on the 1500 metres freestyle Gregorio Paltrinieri. Other potential outsiders and medal contenders included Alberto Martinez, 2012 Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli, Mario Sanzullo, and David Aubry.
