Olympics Wiki

The men's 100 metre freestyle of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 27-28 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 71 athletes competing, the event was won by Caeleb Dressel from United States, with Kyle Chalmers from Australia taking the silver medal and Kliment Kolesnikov from ROC taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Seventy-one athletes qualified for the event with Caeleb Dressel as the first swimmer since 2009 to have recorded a time below 47 seconds. At the most recent world championships, he beat defending Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers by only a tenth of a second, with the competition behind them staying very open. Kliment Kolesnikov won the European championships in a close battle against Alessandro Miressi, with Andrei Minakov, Zach Apple, Nandor Nemeth, and Maxime Grousset also staying within range. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Hwang Sun-woo, David Popovici, and He Junyi.
