Olympics Wiki

The men's 100 metre butterfly of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 29-31 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 59 athletes competing, the event was won by Caeleb Dressel from United States, with Kristof Milak from Hungary taking the silver medal and Noe Ponti from Switzerland taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Fifty-nine athletes qualified for the event with Caeleb Dressel as the outstanding favorite for the title. The reigning world champion and world record holder was the only active swimmer to have recorded a time faster than 50 seconds, with Kristof Milak and Matthew Temple only barely coming within a second from the American. Andrei Minakov won silver at the most recent world championships, with also veteran Mehdy Metella, Josif Miladinov, James Guy, Takeshi Kawamoto, and Naoki Mizunuma among the medal contenders. Other potential outsiders also included Jakub Majerski, Noe Ponti, defending silver medalist Chad le Clos, and defending Olympic champion Joseph Schooling.
