Olympics Wiki

The men's 100 metre breaststroke of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 24-26 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 49 athletes competing, the event was won by Adam Peaty from Great Britain, with Arno Kamminga from Netherlands taking the silver medal and Nicolo Martinenghi from Italy taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-nine athletes qualified for the event with defending Olympic champion and reigning world champion Adam Peaty as the outstanding favorite for the title. The swimmer from Great Britain had not lost an individual race in nine months and had recorded the twenty fastest times ever in the event. His biggest challenges might come from the silver medalist at the European championships Arno Kamminga and Michael Andrew, who had recorded a new American record at the national trials. Peaty's countryman James Wilby won silver at the most recent world championships, with Yan Zibei having taken bronze in a new Asian record. Nicolo Martinenghi and Ilya Shymanovich were two of the other big names in the field, with Andrew Wilson, Anton Chupkov, Huseyin Sakci, and Fabian Schwingenschlogl among the potential outsiders.
