Olympics Wiki

The men's 100 metre backstroke of Swimming 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 25-27 July 2021 in the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. With 41 athletes competing, the event was won by Evgeny Rylov from ROC, with Kliment Kolesnikov from ROC taking the silver medal and Ryan Murphy from United States taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In the first round, the sixteen fastest athletes qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinals, the two fastest athletes of each race, as well as the four fastest non-qualifiers advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-one athletes qualified for the event with plenty of medal contenders in a strong field. Xu Jiayu was the reigning world champion, but the Russian representation was also very strong with the world-leading time of Evgeny Rylov and the junior world record holder Kliment Kolesnikov. Ryan Murphy was the defending Olympic champion in a field that also featured the bronze medalist of the most recent world championships Mitch Larkin, three-time bronze medalist at the European championships Apostolos Christou, European champion Robert Glinta, and 2012 bronze medalist Ryosuke Irie.
