The men's 400 metre individual medley of Swimming 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 6 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Aquatics Stadium. With 27 athletes competing, the event was won by Kosuke Hagino from Japan, with Chase Kalisz from United States taking the silver medal and Daiya Seto from Japan taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two rounds. In the qualification round, all competitors set in a time in heats of three to eight swimmers. The eight swimmers with the fastest times advance to the final. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Twenty-seven athletes qualified for the event with Kosuke Hagino as the big favorites, having five of the six fastest times of the year. Chase Kalisz and Daiya Seto seemed to be the closest challengers, followed by Jay Litherland and Thomas Fraser-Holmes. Other potential outsiders were Federico Turrini, David Verraszto, Brandonn Almeida, and Jacob Heidtmann.
