Sudan first participated at the Olympic Games in 1960 and sent its athletes to compete in most Summer Olympic editions since then. The nation missed Tokyo 1964, boycotted Montreal 1976 with most African nations, and supported the American-led boycott at Moscow 1980. Sudanese athletes have never appeared in any edition of the Winter Olympic Games.

Sudanese athletes have won a single medal at the Summer Olympic Games with a silver from middle-distance runner Ismail Ahmed Ismail in the men's 800 metres at Beijing 2008.

The Sudan Olympic Committee was created in 1956 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1959.
