Stefan Aartsen is a swimmer who has competed for the Netherlands. He competed at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympic Games.
At his first Olympic appearance in Atlanta in 1996, he competed at the individual butterfly events in the swimming competition, as well as the medley relay. In the shortest distance, the 100 metres butterfly, he finished seventh in the eighth heat, and failed to qualify for the finals. The winner of his heat, Denis Pankratov, ultimately won the gold medal in a new world record. At the double distance, the 200 metres butterfly, he finished third in the fifth heat, qualifying as fourth for the B-final. In this race, he finished fifth, 1.5 seconds behind the winner Attila Czene. In the medley relay, he conducted the butterfly leg, finishing third in the fourth heat, missing qualification for the final on 0.14 seconds.
Four years later, he once again competed in the individual events. In his first event, the 200 metres, he finished fifth in the sixth heat, after still being last with 50 metres to go. He qualified as thirteenth for the semifinals. The winner of his heat, Tom Malchow, set a new Olympic record, breaking the eight-year-old former record by only a hundredth of a second. In the semifinals, he finished seventh in his heat with the exact same deficit from Malchow, who once again broke the Olympic record. With this time, he was ranked fourteenth in the event. Three days later, he finished first in the fifth heat on the 100 metres butterfly, qualifying last for the semifinals. However, in these semifinals, he finished last, 1.85 seconds behind Geoff Huegill, who broke the record of Pankratov set four years prior.
