The women's mass start of Speed Skating 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 19 February 2022 in the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval. With 29 athletes competing, the event was won by Irene Schouten from Netherlands, with Ivanie Blondin from Canada taking the silver medal and Francesca Lollobrigida from Italy taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two separate rounds. Both rounds consist of 16 rounds of 400 metres, with the winner of each race receiving 60 points, followed by the best finishers receiving 40 and 20 points. Every four rounds, additional sprints are done, of which the top 3 receive 5, 3, and 1 point, respectively. The athlete with the most points after 16 rounds wins. If multiple speed skaters are tied on the same amount of points, the one with the fastest time is ranked higher.

Preview[]

Twenty-nine athletes qualified for the event with Ivanie Blondin as the big favorite for the medals after finishing in the top 2 of each World Cup event so far. Francesca Lollobrigida had won the last race prior to the Olympic Games and won a silver medal in the 3000 metres, Irene Schouten was in form after winning every long-distanced race she had competed in, as well as the first World Cup event, and Marijke Groenewoud was the reigning world champion. Other medal contenders also included Guo Dan, Elizaveta Golubeva, Mia Kilburg, and Kim Bo-reum.

Giorgia Birkeland was the youngest athlete in the field at the age of 19, and was over two years younger than Karolina Bosiek, who was about to turn 22 years old, and Marijke Groenewoud, who just turned 23. On the other side of the scales was veteran Claudia Pechstein, who was due to compete at her eighth Olympic Games at the age of 49. She was 16 years older than Marit Fjellanger Boehm, who would make her Olympic debut, and Mia Kilburg. Behind Pechstein with eight Olympic appearances, Valerie Maltais took the reins with four Olympic Games, though the three previous editions had all been in short track. Four competitors made their third Olympic appearances, including defending medalists Nana Takagi and Kim Bo-reum.
