Preview[]

Twelve athletes qualified for the event with Irene Schouten as the big favorite for the title. The Dutch star had won every race in the 3000 metres and 5000 metres she had competed in, with Isabelle Weidemann coming second in three out of four World Cup races. Francesca Lollobrigida won the most recent World Cup race in absence of Schouten, while Ragne Wiklund also finished in the top 4 of all long-distance races in the season. Other potential outsiders also included Martina Sablikova, Natalia Voronina, and Isabelle Weidemann.

Momoka Horikawa was at 18 years old the youngest competitor in the field as the second-youngest competitor in the women's 5000 metres ever, behind Kirstin Holum in 1998. She was over three years younger than Ragne Wiklund, with Sanne in 't Hof as the only other debutante in the field. Martina Sablikova was the veteran of the field at the age of 34 and was due to compete at her fifth edition of the Olympic Games. Francesca Lollobrigida and Misaki Oshigiri were due to start at their third, with five athletes returning after having first competed in Pyeongchang. Natalia Voronina was the only defending medalist, after Esmee Visser failed to qualify through the national trials, and Claudia Pechstein only qualified for other events.
