Preview[]
Thirty athletes qualified for the event with Miho Takagi as the woman to beat. The Japanese speed skater had won all races over 1500 metres she had competed in, though she skipped the last race of the World Cup to prepare for the Olympic Games. The last race was won by Brittany Bowe, who edged out World Cup leader Ayano Sato for the win. Defending Olympic champion Ireen Wust finished in the top 4 in all three World Cup events and would once again be a contender for the medals, but contention was high from Elizaveta Golubeva, Francesca Lollobrigida, Ragne Wiklund, and Antoinette de Jong.
Ragne Wiklund was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 21, just ahead of Adake Ahenaer, Ekaterina Sloeva, and Marijke Groenewoud, who were all around a year older than the Norwegian. Five-time Olympian and defending champion Ireen Wust was the oldest competitor at the age of 35, two years older than three-time Olympian Brittany Bowe, two-time Olympian Huang Yu-ting, and four-time Olympian Natalia Czerwonka. Yekaterina Aidova also competed at the Olympic Games for the fourth time, with six athletes following with three appearances. Thirteen athletes made their Olympic debuts in Beijing.

Ayano Sato recorded her best individual result yet, after a eighth place in the 3000 metres in 2018, while Marijke Groenewoud finished in the top 5 at her very first Olympic race. Three-time Olympian Francesca Lollobrigida and debutante Elizaveta Golubeva completed the top 7.
