The men's 1500 metre of Speed Skating 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 8 February 2022 in the Beijing National Speed Skating Oval. With 29 athletes competing, the event was won by Kjeld Nuis from Netherlands, with Thomas Krol from Netherlands taking the silver medal and Kim Min-seok from South Korea taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of fifteen head-to-head races of 1500 metres. The competitor with the fastest time is the winner.
Preview[]
Twenty-nine athletes qualified for the event with a quite open field. Joey Mantia was the leader of the World Cup standings after four events, but Ning Zhongyan was a fierce competitor and both won medals at all four events. Kim Min-seok also won a race ahead of the two, but Thomas Krol, Connor Howe, and Allan Dahl Johansson had also finished in the top 3 in any event throughout the season. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Japan's Seitaro Ichinohe and Takuro Oda, defending champion Kjeld Nuis, and Peder Kongshaug.
Peder Kongshaug was also the youngest athlete to compete at the age of 20, just two months younger than Daniil Aldoshkin and a year younger than Casey Dawson and Connor Howe, with all four making their Olympic debuts. Joey Mantia was the oldest athlete and was due to start at his third edition of the Olympic Games, one time fewer than second-oldest Haralds Silovs, and the same number as Ruslan Zakharov, who was a year younger, Emery Lehman, and Bart Swings. Over half of the field made their Olympic debuts, with defending silver medalist Patrick Roest only competing in other events in Beijing.
