Preview[]
Thirty athletes qualified for the event with Thomas Krol as the man to beat. Despite only competing in three out four World Cup races, he was still leading the standings. Dutch skaters had dominated the event with all podium places in three out of four events, with Krol winning twice and Hein Otterspeer having won once, while Kai Verbij was the reigning world champion in the event. Haavard Holmefjord Lorentzen seemed to be the closest contender for the Dutch delegation, but Ning Zhongyan won the last World Cup event, ahead of Jordan Stolz and Viktor Mushtakov, while potential other outsiders included Laurent Dubreuil, Cha Min-kyu, and Cornelius Kersten.
Jordan Stolz was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 17, and was almost four years younger than other debutants Wataru Morishige and Connor Howe, with four athletes being born in 1999. The oldest competitor Hein Otterspeer would also finally make his Olympic debut at the age of 33, after missing out on the selections of 2010, 2014, and 2018. Second-oldest competitor Denis Kuzin, who was only a month younger, was the veteran in the field and was due to start at his fourth Olympic appearance, followed by Haavard Holmefjord Lorentzen with three. Lorentzen was also the only medalist from 2018 to try to defend his place on the podium - defending champion Kjeld Nuis failed to qualify through the national trials after finishing fourth for the event, while 2018 bronze medalist Kim Tae-yun wasn't selected to compete in 2022. Out of thirty athletes, seventeen competitors made their Olympic debuts.
