Preview[]

Twelve athletes qualified for the event with Nils van der Poel as outstanding favorite for the title. The Swede was the reigning world champion and world record holder and dominated the long distances throughout the season. Patrick Roest seemed to be his closest challenger, but hadn't won the distance in a while, recently having been defeated by veteran Jorrit Bergsma, who won the Olympic event in 2014. Ted-Jan Bloemen was the defending Olympic champion but was not really in form, Graeme Fish was the former world record holder before Van der Poel set his record time, with potential outsiders including Patrick Beckert and Bart Swings.

The two most recent world record holders in the event Nils van der Poel and Graeme Fish were the youngest competitors in the field at the ages of 25 and 24, respectively. Whereas it was the very first Olympic appearance for Fish as the only event he would compete in in Beijing, Van der Poel had already competed in the 5000 metres in 2018 and 2022, the latter of which resulted in gold. The Swede was only four months younger than Patrick Roest, who had also already won 3 Olympic medals. The team mate of Roest, Jorrit Bergsma, was the oldest competitor in the field at the age of 36, but was followed by defending Olympic champion Ted-Jan Bloemen and Alexander Rumyantsev by only a few months. Patrick Beckert was the only one in the field who would compete at his fourth edition of the Olympic Games, having competed in every edition since 2010. Rumyantsev also competed back in 2010, but was one of the Russian athletes banned for the 2018 edition. Fish and Michele Malfatti made their Olympic debuts.

Results[]

Nils van der Poel won his second Olympic gold medal after the 5000 metres and became the first athlete since Jochem Uytdehaage in 2002 to win both long distances. He also broke his own world record by over 2 seconds, and was almost 14 seconds faster than Patrick Roest, who he also defeated for gold in the 5000 metres. Roest won his fourth Olympic medal in four different events, after winning silver in the 1500 metres in 2018, bronze in the team pursuit in 2018, and silver in the 5000 metres a few days prior. Davide Ghiotto won his first-ever Olympic medal after winning bronze in a new national record, taking up the sport of fellow Italian Nicola Tumolero who had won bronze in 2018. Defending silver medalist and 2014 Olympic champion Jorrit Bergsma completed his collection of top 5 placements after having won gold, silver, and bronze in previous events, as well as having finished fifth in the 5000 metres, while Alexander Rumyantsev recorded his best result ever at the Olympic Games by finishing fifth, and Graeme Fish finished sixth in his Olympic debut.
