Preview[]
Thirty-five athletes qualified for the event, with the world record holder and leader in the World Cup standings Denis Yuskov banned from competing. Sverre Lunde Pedersen was the only other skater to have won a World Cup event in the season, but the silver medalist of Sochi Koen Verweij had finished on the podium in four out of five events. Joey Mantia was also a very strong contender in this event, just like Patrick Roest, who finished second in the world allround championships. The third Dutch skater Kjeld Nuis was the current world champion, but had skipped most of the World Cup season. Other medal contenders and outsiders for this event included Vincent de Haitre, Sindre Henriksen, Allan Dahl Johansson, and Takuro Oda.
