Thirty-six athletes qualified for the event, with Kjeld Nuis and Havard Lorentzen as the big favorites. The two had gathered exactly the same number of points in the World Cup events they both participated in, with Holmefjord leading the rankings after competing in an additional event. Nuis was still undefeated in 2018, having won the last two international races. Behind the two top seeds, Kai Verbij was the only other competitor to have won a World Cup event, with Vincent de Haitre and Mika Poutala showing consistent results. Other medal contenders were two-time Olympic medalist Koen Verweij, Nico Ihle, Alexandre St-Jean, and Joey Mantia.
