Incidents and Conflicts[]

Somalia has been involved in multiple controversies and problems at the games.

Somali Civil War[]

Due to the ongoing civil war, many athletes who originally represented Somalia have had difficulty training and therefore leave to represent other countries. This is part of the reason why Somalia doesn't have any medals nor has competed in a Winter Olympics.

Some of these athletes include:

Montreal 1976[]

Somalia did not compete at these games due to the inclusion of New Zealand in the games.

Moscow 1980[]

Somalia joined the boycott of the 1980 games to protest the soviet invasion, and therefore did not compete at these games.[2]

Barcelona 1992[]

Somalia did not compete at these games due to an ongoing famine with the country.

Athens 2004[]

Farah Weheliye Addo, the president of the Somali Olympic Committe at the time, was found guilty of embezzling funds from FIFA. As a result, he was banned from the 2004 Games.

Other Incidents[]

Samia Yusuf Omar, one of the athletes representing Somalia, got threats from a terrorist organization after returning to Somalia after the 2008 Games. She then hid from sports and tried not to get with the terrorists. Sadly, she drowned on 2012 on a boat headed to Italy after the boat she was on ran out of petrol, and people were causing chaos trying to escape.
