Preview[]
Twenty-four athletes qualified for the event that had almost been dominated by the United States since the event's introduction in 1998. Despite only a bronze medal at the event's debut, the nation had since won three of four gold medals, and seven out of twelve total medals. The athlete with the most medals was Kelly Clark with a gold medal and two bronze medals, but the youngster Chloe Kim was the big favorite. Maddie Mastro and Arielle Gold were the remaining riders to be part of the strong team that would have contention of China's Cai Xuetong and Liu Jiayu, and Haruna Matsumoto and Hikaru Oe from Japan. The Australian representation was the only one to prevent the United States to sweep the medals in the previous two editions, but Emily Arthur and Holly Crawford were not expected to medal here. However, other outsiders included Queralt Castellet and Kurumi Imai.
