The competition exists out of two separate rounds. In the first round, all competitors performed a jump, scored on distance, balance, style, and some other factors. The eight teams with the highest combined scores advance to the second round, in which all eight teams jump again. The team with the highest combined score of the competition round and the final round is the winner of the event.

Twelve teams qualified for this event, with the world champion Austria, the winner of the previous two World Cup events Slovenia, and Germany as the big favorites for the title. Poland also had strong individual jumpers with Kamil Stoch having won both individual events, but with Noriaki Kasai of Japan and Anders Bardal of Norway also having won individual medals, there were more teams to take into account.
