The men's large hill of Ski Jumping 2014 during the 2014 Winter Olympics was held on 14-15 February 2014 in the RusSki Gorki Ski Jumping Center. With 61 athletes competing, the event was won by Kamil Stoch from Poland, with Noriaki Kasai from Japan taking the silver medal and Peter Prevc from Slovenia taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of three separate rounds. In the qualification, all competitors performed a jump, scored on distance, balance, style, and some other factors. The forty ski jumpers with the highest scores, as well as the ten ski jumpers in the top 10 of the World Cup rankings, advance to the competition round, in which all fifty competitors jump again. The thirty athletes with the highest scores advance to the final. The athlete with the highest combined score of the competition round and the final round is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Sixty-one athletes qualified for the event, with plenty of medal contenders. Kamil Stoch had won the most recent World Cup events and was one of the big favorites as the reigning world champion, though recent World Cup winners also included Jernej Damjan, silver medalist of the world championships Peter Prevc, Anders Bardal, and Andreas Wellinger. Other medal contenders also included Severin Freund, Noriaki Kasai, Michael Hayboeck, and Thomas Diethart, who had all performed very well in the World Cup season. Anders Jacobsen had won the bronze medalist at the most recent world championships, and with former world champion Gregor Schlierenzauer also in the field, the competition was pretty open.
