Preview[]
Twenty-five athletes qualified for the event with Martins Dukurs as the leader of the World Cup standings after winning three out of the last four races, followed by the strong German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer. Alexander Tretiakov and Tomass Dukurs had also won races throughout the World Cup season and would be big contenders for the medals, while defending Olympic champion Yun Sung-bin returned to defend his title. Other medal contenders and potential outsiders also included Jung Seung-gi, Matt Weston, and Amedeo Bagnis.
Blake Enzie was the youngest competitor in the men's skeleton and was the only athlete to have been born in the 21st century, with Amedeo Bagnis, Samuel Maier, and Evgeniy Rukosuev being almost two years older than the Briton. Tomass Dukurs was the veteran of the field, having competed in Salt Lake City in 2002, with Martins Dukurs and Alexander Tretiakov starting their Olympic career in 2006. The brothers Dukurs also started on their fifth Olympic Games, with 2014 Olympic champion Tretiakov and Ander Mirambell competing in their fourth. Nathan Crumpton took on his second Olympic Games within six months, having competed in the 100 metres sprint in Tokyo in 2021. Fifteen out of twenty-five skeleton riders made their Olympic debuts. From former medalists, 2018 Olympic champion Yun Sung-bin attempted to defend his title, 2014 Olympic champion and 2010 bronze medalist Tretiakov returned after missing out on 2018 due to a doping ban, and 2010 and 2014 silver medalist Martins Dukurs hoped to take revenge for his fourth-place finish in 2018.
