Skeleton has been featured at the Olympic Games since the 1928 Winter Olympics, and aside from being featured at St. Moritz 1948, it did not appear again until Salt Lake City 2002. Women have been allowed to compete since Salt Lake City 2002.

Great Britain is the only country to have won a medal at every appearance of skeleton at the Winter Olympic Games, but only has won a single medal more than the United States, with the same number of gold medals. Together, they have won 17 out of 36 medals.
