Samoa first participated at the Olympic Games in 1984 under its former name Western Samoa and sent its athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic edition since then. Samoan athletes have never appeared in any edition of the Winter Olympic Games.

Samoa was retroactively awarded its first medal at Beijing 2008 as the silver and bronze medallists were stripped of their medals in 2016 for doping. Ele Opeloge upgraded her position from fourth to claiming a silver medal in the women's +75 kg.

The Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee was established in 1983 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee on the same year.
