The women's 49erfx of Sailing 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 27 July-2 August 2021 in the Enoshima Yacht Harbour. With 21 pairs competing, the event was won by Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze from Brazil, with Susann Beucke and Tina Lutz from Germany taking the silver medal and Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz from Netherlands taking bronze.

Format

The competition exists out of two main rounds, with the opening series consisting of twelve races, in which the first finishers receive one point, the second finishers two points, and so on. After twelve races, the ten pairs with the fewest number of points compete in the medal race, in which all points are doubled. The pair with the fewest points after thirteen races is the winner of the event.

Preview

Twenty-one pairs qualified for the event with Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz as one of the big favorites, having won the world championships in 2018 and 2019, though they only placed eighth in 2020. Paula Barcelo Martin and Tamara Echegoyen Dominguez were the reigning world champions, with Charlotte Dobson and Saskia Tidey having taken silver, and Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea having won bronze. Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze won silver at the world championships in 2019 and were the defending Olympic champions and would also be a pair to look out for.
