The men's single sculls of Rowing 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 23-30 July 2021 in the Sea Forest Waterway. With 32 athletes competing, the event was won by Stefanos Ntouskos from Greece, with Kjetil Borch from Norway taking the silver medal and Damir Martin from Croatia taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of four rounds, each with races of up to eight boats. In each round, the top few with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Thirty-two athletes qualified for the event with world champion Oliver Zeidler as one of the big favorites for the title. The German rower won a close final of the 2019 world championships against Sverri Nielsen, and also won two out of three World Cup races in the months prior to the Olympic Games, though Nielsen defeated him in the last race. Kjetil Borch was the 2018 world champion and finished just behind the two in two out of three World Cup races. Damir Martin was the defending silver medalist and also showed good performances in the races as a leadup to the Olympic Games. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included bronze medalist of the 2018 world championships Mindaugas Griskonis, Gennaro Alberto di Mauro, and fourth-placed at the European championships Stefanos Ntouskos.
