Roald Edgar Aas was a speed skater who competed for Norway. He competed at the 1952, 1956, and 1960 Winter Olympic Games. He passed away on 18 February 2012, at the age of 83.
At his first appearance at the Olympic Games in his home country, he only competed in the 1500 metres in the speed skating competition. He was paired in the ninth pair against William Ashford Jones and made his difference in the last two laps. He won against his direct opponent with 12 seconds, winning the bronze medal.
Four years later, he came back to the Olympic podium, this time also competing at the longer 3000 metres, as well as defending his bronze medal. In his first event, the 3000 metres, he was paired in the fifth heat against Colin Hickey. He was almost 9 seconds faster than the Austrian, and skated in a national record to sixth place. The next day, he competed in the 1500 metres, in which he was up against Arthur Mannsbarth in the sixth heat. Once again, he had nothing to fear from his opponent, winning with a difference of 5 seconds. However, this time was not good enough for another good result, finishing tenth.
In 1960, he would experience his first Olympic Games outside of Europe, and this time, he competed in the three longest distances. In the 5000 metres, he finished only 25th out of 37, 25 seconds behind the podium. One day later, he competed in his speciality, the 1500 metres. In a nailbiting finish, he had one of the fastest last laps to tie for gold with Eugeni Grishin, who had also won the short distance. With his third race in three days, he competed in the longest distance, the 10000 metres. Despite his good performance the day before, he couldn't surprise, and finished 23rd out of 29, over a minute out of the medals.
