The Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium (Estádio Olímpico), which is currently named Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos, was a venue used for most of the athletics events during Rio de Janeiro 2016, as well as some of the football matches. It was built between 2003 and 2007 and was opened as the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, after the former member of the International Olympic Committee João Havelange, who passed away in 2016.

It was the only stadium located in Engenhão de Dentro used at the edition of the Olympic Games, but was assigned in the Maracanã cluster, together with the Maracanã Stadium, Maracanãzinho, and Sambódromo. Despite its normal capacity being around 46,000, this was increased to 60,000 during the Olympic Games.
